http://www.marshapels.com/Home

Above is a link to one if my favorite artists Marsha Pels. Her work explores very personal experiences that have happened throughout her life and shares them and brings them to a public realm.

Private vs. Public

Private vs. Public:

Art work- public vs. private
Living spaces - specifically homeless vs. homestead vs. camping vs. sleeping in your car
Work spaces - home office or coffee shop
Cleansing - washing your face in a public bathroom vs. in your own home
Body function - you get the idea...

I think in terms of what is both public and private at the same time, while existing in both realms of the public or private space, they are different.

A post from Marten

Marten hasn't been able to access the blog yet, so here is his post:

Since this a group project, was wondering how we can work on this together with everyones busy schedule! Of course conveniently speaking, during our class time at Chestnut would be idea. I know Tim lives in Oakland and has opened his apt. for us to use, I think the idea of a private space made public would be as an installation kind of thing…I guess! Materials? Transportation of?
U! And Janine Antoni's sculptures. Chocolate and Soap that she eats and uses and exhibits.

This is another performance involving nakedness. Its from Regina Galindo and in it crowd undresses her.
And another one from her.
I still need to finish the readings to feel less confused, but this piece from Marina will always be very shocking for me and in general many of her pieces are very intense and intimate. Almost like forcing intimacy.

I still continue to think about the idea of being able to be alone or hidden in a small place and at the same time being surrounded by people. A small box of intimacy that can become a recovery center from being seen. I was also thinking about how that place is the bathroom in modern architecture. All the things that happen in the bathroom. Then, that got me thinking about conversations one has with oneself, the honesty of those conversations, the tones or even the language used. I remember always talking to myself in English or even french, and I don't really know much french.

That is all I am thinking regarding this project, at least until now. But I have to read some more.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwPTKmFcYAQ
Heres an artist that is dealing with similar concepts in the readings you guys may wanna check out.

I will put up more if anything else come to my mind :)
I worked on a group project with my design class last semester that was focused on turning a portion of the roof into a useable space, we made a table and a chair made of grass as well as stools to sit on that surrounded the table. I would be interested in working with a group and trying to make some sort of installation that addressees this public/private prompt. Whether it be on or off campus, or even building anything at all.

Welcome to Our Brainstorming Platform!

Please add ideas, images, questions, etc. to this blog.  I would like you to post at least one topic for discussion this week (before Friday) and also to respond to at least two one other postings by your classmates.

Your assignment is to consider Public Versus (?) Private and to collaboratively come up with an exhibition and/or event within which to address issues of the public and private realms.
